ADB Commends Uzbekistan as Transit Hub
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has publicly commended Uzbekistan for its role in Central Asian economic cooperation. The remarks were delivered by President Haruhiko Kuroda of the ADB. Tashkent will play host to the 43rd annual meeting of the ADB the first week of May 2010. “This critically important project achieved what once seemed out of reach: a steady supply of electricity to Kabul,” said Mr. Kuroda. “The project, which underscores Uzbekistan’s crucial role in the region, has benefited 4 million people and laid the foundation for a network to reach many other parts of Afghanistan that are still without access to electricity.”
President Kuroda went on to further emphasize that regional cooperation in trade and transportation will only benefit the region and noted Uzbekistan’s strategic location and potential as regional transit hub. Already the ADB is funding a 75-kilometer rail line connecting Uzbekistan to Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan. While modest in size, it represents the scope of work that can be accomplished regionally, with tangible results.
