Kazakhtenge_IreneA tangible result of great regional economic cooperation in Eurasia has been the launch of a single unified customs regime between Belarus, the Russian Federation and Kazakhstan.  The new unified customs tariff being used by the three countries is available in Russian on the official website of the Customs Union

While the new customs union went into effect on January 1st there have been a few hiccups reported.  According to the U.S.-Russia Business Council:

“Additionally, you may be aware that new non-tariff regulations have led to delayed shipments for some importers.  Recent reports note new licensing requirements for equipment containing encryption technology and alcohol.  Russia’s government agencies are in the process of adapting to the new regulations, and temporary licenses are now being issued for alcohol imports.  Telecommunications companies are working with customs authorities towards resolution of licensing issues for high-tech equipment.”

The customs union has the potential to greatly benefit manufacturers in Kazakhstan who already export into Russia.  In addition, for U.S. and European firms expanding into the region, northern Kazakhstan provides several unique regional transit hubs for export and distribution into Southern Russia and Western Siberia.
